Excerpt

He sighed as he palmed her face then brushed his thumb

lightly across the bridge of her cheek. “I know you’re scared. But

I swear, I won’t let anything happen to you.” He kissed her lips

once then leapt out of the truck.

The door slammed shut. Kira’s attention went straight to the

horde across the street. A few of them on the edge of the group

turned their way. Her stomach twisted into knots as Sam’s light

began to show through the thin strip between the raised hood

and truck. That was her cue.

With a shaky hand, she turned the ignition. Nothing

happened. She immediately tried again, but still there was no

coughing or sputtering, not even a horrible clicking noise came

from the engine of this beast.

“Hang on!” Sam hopped up onto the front of the truck.

While he struggled with something, jerking a hose or a

connector back and forth, Kira looked at the wandering dead. A

few more of them had turned their way, slowly discovering there

were living beings here, flesh they were eager to consume.

“Try again,” Sam said as he slid to the ground.

She turned the ignition. The engine coughed but didn’t start.

A thunderous boom came from the exhaust startling her as Sam

slammed the hood down. He hurried back around and hopped

into the truck just as the dead began shuffling their way.

“Hurry up Sam,” Kira said as he turned the key. The truck

finally coughed, sputtered, then started. There was another loud

backfire then the engine growled to full life.

When he shifted the truck into first gear, one of the bodies

hopped up onto the truck. It was a woman, naked, decayed as

she crawled across the hood, eyes on Kira who leaned further

back in the seat.

“Put on your seatbelt!” he demanded as he stepped his foot

down, forcing the truck to lurch forward.

She looked down to find the middle belt stuffed down in the

seat. As much as she dreaded moving away from Sam, she slid

to the passenger side and belted herself in with the shoulder

strap.

Sam sped up, weaving the truck back and forth around

wrecked cars and trucks. The desiccated body slid across the

dusty hood desperate to hold on as it attempted to crawl up to

the windshield. Its eyes were still locked on Kira.

“Damn it, get off!” Sam shouted as he pulled the truck close

to the guard rail on Kira’s side. The sound of metal scraping

against metal hurt Kira’s ears. Her body broke out in chills as

she held her palms over her ears to block out the sound until the

guard rail turned into a cement wall.

The force of the truck hitting the wall sent the body sliding

off to the side. Sam turned the truck into it again hoping the

blow would knock the body off, but it held on tightly. It grabbed

hold of the side view mirror and pulled itself up. It opened its

mouth showing rotting teeth and bone as it screeched, sending a

different kind of chill down Kira’s spine. Then, without warning,

the thing punched its bony fist through the windshield.

Sam swerved. The truck hit the cement wall head first then

immediately stalled out. Tears sprung to Kira’s eyes, but not out

of fear alone. There was something else, something she’d never

felt before. It was warm as it dripped from her brow.

She touched her temple with her fingers then brought her

hand forward. Blood.
